Students at California colleges introduced to low-cost auto insurance programsNotebook computer maker ASUS Computer International and representatives from California’s Department of Insurance have been paying visits to the community colleges in California in an attempt to introduce students to the CLCA program or the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program that has been offered by the state.

Most students look forward to saving money in today’s scenario and the CLCA program helps in providing affordable liability-only insurance which meets the requirements of the state’s responsibility laws for under $400 per year.

Chris Shultz, Deputy Commissioner stated that although the CLCA program was a wonderful resource for citizens of California, it was especially useful for college students. They can avail CLCA insurance for as little as $26 per month and thereby satisfy the insurance requirements of the state.

The CDI also stated that it was aware of the fact that most students shopped for online insurance and looked for bargains. This was the reason why the ASUS representatives made their recent visit to American River College in Sacramento and attempted to introduce the CLCA program by demonstrating the ease with which one could apply for the program online.

This visit to the American River College was the second in the series of visits by the Insurance Department and the third visit would be followed next month at the community college in San Diego.

Some of the eligibility requirements for the CLCA program include:

  • The applicant must have a good driving record with no more than one ‘at-fault, property damage only’ accident or one point in moving violation within the last 3 years.
  • The applicant should not have any at-fault accidents that involve bodily injury or death of any individual within the last 3 years.
  • The applicant should not have any charges of felony or misdemeanor conviction for violating the vehicle code.
  • The income eligibility for the family should meet the limits of $27,225 for one person, $36,775 for two people, and $55,875 for a family of 4 members.
  • The total value of the vehicle to be insured must not exceed $20,000.

Shultz also stated that each day there were more than a million uninsured drivers who take to the roads in California. Driving without insurance is illegal and hence the California Department of Insurance encourages its citizens to check to see if they do qualify.

The CLCA program was first established in 1999 in San Francisco and Los Angeles, as a pilot project and has expanded statewide ever since.
