It is a fact that you must have auto insurance to drive on the highways and roads where you live. And each state has its own mandatory requirements. But when you start adding in additional coverage, your insurance premiums could raise up accordingly. Here are some discounts that are available in the state of Vermont that will help reduce some of those costs

Hybrid

If you drive a hybrid car or any other vehicle that uses alternative fuel you may be eligible for a discount on your insurance premium. Check with your insurance company to see if they offer this type of discount.

Insure More Than One Auto on Your Plan

If you are a two car family and there are at least two or more people at home who drive, you might be able to get a multi car discount. The vehicles must be primarily driven by you and/or residents of the household.

Mature Drivers Discount

Many insurance companies give discounts to their drivers who are in the 50-55 age group. Some companies, rather than a discount give already lowered rates for this group of drivers. Many retirees can benefit from lowered rates as insurers realize that they are on the road less now that they don’t drive to a job every day.

Take a Class

You could reduce your premium on the three major liability coverages, property damage, bodily injury and personal injury, if you take a defensive driving course. The discount will apply as long as it is for a private vehicle and the main person or people who operate the vehicle successfully complete a state approved class.

Keep Your Grades Up

If you are a full time high school or college student under the age of 25, you may be eligible for a discount if you get good grades and keep them up. The requisites are you must be ranked in the upper 20% of your class, have a grade average of B or higher, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher or have made honor roll or the dean’s list. This program is also available for are home schooled but proof of eligibility is required.

Combining Your Insurance Needs

If you bring all of your insurance needs to one company you could realize some substantial savings all the way around. Some car insurance agents will give you a discount if you bring your life, health, homeowners and/or rental insurance to their company. Having everything under one roof makes it easier to keep track of for you.

Air Bag Discount

Most vehicles from 1993 on have been produced with air bags that have been installed at the factory. Seat belts are now commonplace on vehicles but air bags are still relatively new. If you have a newer vehicle that has air bags, and especially passenger side airbags you could get a break on your PIP and Supplemental Medical Payments coverage.

Safe Drivers Discount

Almost every insurance company rewards their safe drivers for having a clean driving record. In order to be eligible for this discount you have to have a clean driving record for at least the past three years. This means no moving violations or accidents that were your fault.

Additional Safety Discounts

Some insurance companies will give discounts to their unmarried drivers who are under 25 and complete a safe driving class through the company and keep their driving record clear. Also, some of the newer vehicles have been deemed safer than other models and could qualify for a vehicle safety discount.
