Are There Different Types of Personal Injury Protection Coverage or PIP Coverage?

For some states, like the state of New Jersey, when a motorist is applying for Personal Injury Protection Coverage, the motorist should specify what kind of car insurance coverage or PIP coverage he wants to include in his/her car insurance policy. Motorists should specify what coverage they want because in some states car insurance companies are to provide an array of choices for this coverage, specifically the PIP Coverage.

Before discussing what the different types of PIP Coverage, which are offered by car insurance companies in the state of New Jersey, let’s discuss what Personal Injury Protection Coverage or PIP Coverage is?

PIP Coverage is one of the different car insurance coverage offered by car insurance companies to their consumers. PIP Coverage is that kind of car insurance coverage that covers within the specific limits, the medical, hospital, and funeral expenses of the insured motorist or policy holder. Aside from the insured motorist, the policy holder’s relatives in the same household, passengers of the policy holder, and other authorized driver of the policy holder are insured by the PIP Coverage. Also in instances like the Policy holder and his/her family members are injured while riding someone else’s car or a pedestrian when struck by another vehicle, in some states PIP Coverage also insures or covers for these situations.

The different PIP Coverage, offered by car insurance companies in the state of New Jersey and their respective description:

  • Full PIP Primary. This type of PIP Coverage, acts as the primary coverage for injuries incurred by the policy holder and his/her passengers in an accident. It also covers income continuation, funeral expenses, death benefits, and essential services expenses, as detailed below.
  • Full PIP Health Primary. This PIP Coverage should be purchased if another health insurance provider acts as the primary coverage for injuries sustained by a policy holder and his/her passengers in an accident. This also covers income continuation, funeral expenses, death benefits, and essential services expenses, as detailed below.
  • Medical Only PIP Primary. This PIP Coverage acts as the primary coverage for injuries sustained by a policy holder and his/her passengers in an accident.
  • Medical Only Health Primary. This PIP Coverage should be purchased if another health insurance provider acts as the primary coverage for injuries sustained by a policy holder and his/her passengers in an accident.

Please note that Full PIP Health Primary and Medical Only Health Primary are not available if the policy holder use Medicare or Medicaid as his/her primary health insurance or if the policy holder himself is an active member of the military. In addition, some health insurers do not cover injuries related to car accidents. If the policy holder is unsure of what your health insurance covers, it is advisable that he/she should select Full PIP Primary or Medical Only PIP Primary.
