According to the Independent Insurance Agents of America out of ten students seven have cars. This is the picture of today’s roads and highways. Across states there are different restrictions about the legal age for people allowed to drive nonetheless in general we have a lot of young drivers today.

It is mandated by state laws that everyone who drives must have auto insurance coverage first before they hit the road. Meaning to say even if you do not have your own car yet you drive or even if you just have a learner’s permit and you drive you must have auto insurance coverage.

For young people who do not have their driver’s license yet and what they have instead is a learner’s permit they can actually get coverage for their vehicles. A learner’s permit or driver’s permit is a temporary license permitting the holder to drive but with some restrictions. Nonetheless since we are talking about driving getting insured while behind the wheels is a legal obligation. For states implementing strictly their law of having at least the minimum auto insurance coverage for drivers, getting some coverage is not a question even if one only has learner’s permit. Once caught driving with just the driver’s or learner’s permit and without any insurance coverage consequences are actually heavier compared to being caught without any policy with a permanent license. A more severe penalty can also be expected to be given to a person with just the learner’s permit if he or she happened to get involved in an accident regardless of whose fault it is.

Just like the permanent license, learner’s permit comes with certain responsibilities among which include financial responsibility. The state wanted to be certain that drivers can be financially responsible in cases of crashes thus they set minimum requirements for auto insurance coverage. This is the reason why even with just the learner’s permit one needs to avail coverage.

A holder of learner’s permit can be covered in two ways. First young drivers with learner’s permit can get their own auto insurance. This is a separate insurance from any of their family’s existing auto insurance policy. Second they can just be covered under someone else’s on hand auto insurance policy like the ones their parents have. Either ways young drivers can get the insurance coverage required by the law however one thing to keep in mind is that premiums for young drivers with learner’s permit are more expensive than premiums of new drivers with permanent license.
