Common Car Insurance Fees: What Are They?

Some of us liked to spend our time reading the fine print while others do not. They just leave it behind, and once they are stumped on something, that is the time review the fine print at the back of their contracts. Why would they need to print those reservations and qualifications like tiny loose particles in the first place when they are so important?

One thing for sure, is that breaching those terms will grant your insurer to collect additional charges without regard. Since we do not want you to pay unnecessary charges because of failure to read the fine print, we are going to discuss some of the most common car insurance fees that insurers impose these days.

On top of the list is probably the cancellation policy. Nearly all insurance companies will charge fees if you want to cut off your policy with them before the agreed term ends. There is the usual standard fee involved and additional fees added. Such fees are often expensive, which is the reason why it is important that you scrutinize the company before signing any contract with them. If you are changing vehicles to another insurance provider, it is best to use your current insurer and only change company once the renewal date arrives.

If you want to update your policy, some companies would also levy minimal charges. As always, new quotes are provided to cover the next 12 months and fees usually waived to show generosity for staying with them.

Just like any other debts, failing to pay the monthly fees (for those non-annual policyholder) will incur charges. Fees can vary from one company to the other. This is the reason why you need to make sure that you have enough funds to cover the cost and not allow your account to run past due each month.

Certain forms are time sensitive and will need to be returned on or before the date indicated. Typically, a 14-day deadline is set to give you ample time to read, understand, sign in and then send it back to the insurer. Breaching this area constitutes administrative charges that are usually applied to your account.

In case you lost your insurance copy and you want those documents reprinted, the insurer will also charge you with nominal administrative fees.  Obviously, you need to have these documents at hand in case you encounter accidents later on. These documents are extremely vital and you cannot afford to drive without them.

If you change something in your vehicle, home location or stage in your life then you would need to inform your insurer as well. There have been instances in the past, wherein several claims were not honored because the insurance company was not updated of the insured person’s change of address. Needless to say, you need to take some effort to inform them or you could suffer the same fate.  If you are changing your car’s engine or chassis, make sure to notify them for the vehicle to be properly covered.
