Why some auto insurance rates for senior citizens are expensive

Statistics show that most vehicular accidents are caused by young drivers; hence they are usually expected to pay higher premiums for their auto insurance. This case however does not necessarily mean that age can be inversely proportional with car insurance rates because there are instances when senior citizens may need to pay more for their auto insurance policies.

While teenage drivers are highly associated with over speeding, distracted driving (like using mobile phones while behind the wheels) and driving under the influence (of alcohol or drugs), seniors on the other hand are associated with inattention in driving and slow reaction to driving related events. These associations in their own ways drive auto insurance rates for young and old people expensive.

Another reason why seniors are considered risky by some auto insurance company is the fact that most seniors are usually under some sort of medication to aid certain ailments or just old age. The side effects of these drugs may not allow older people to develop their best driving conditions which in effect can be a cause of certain accident.

However the fact still remains that most seniors opt to still drive their own vehicles instead of using public means for transportation nowadays. Driving is one way on how people gain the feeling of independence thus for older people being able to drive their own way can be a manifestation that their actions cannot be limited by their age. This is one reason why older people still drive.

The good news is that older people still have the chance to somehow reduce their expensive auto insurance rates. Auto insurance companies are offering senior discounts that grandmothers and fathers can get. One way for seniors to get friendlier car insurance coverage is through discounts on low-mileage or by being occasional drivers. Since seniors are mostly retired employees they are not required to drive their way to work everyday making them drive less than the average working person. There are also cars that are specifically designed for old drivers which can address their needs to be able to drive safely. Also, installing safety devices in their vehicles can reduce the premiums seniors have to pay. Another car factor that seniors can take into consideration is the make and model of the car they are going to drive. Models that are less prone to being stolen are good choices to get lower auto insurance rates.

These are just some of the ways on how seniors can get better auto insurance rates and since policies on car insurances for senior drivers may vary across states it is highly recommended for people to consult their insurance agents first.
